Nikolaj – Københavns Kunsthal 40 Years

12. February 2021 to 13. June 2021
Nikolaj – Københavns Kunsthal 40 Years (Nikolaj – Københavns Kunsthal 40 Years) marks the opening of Nikolaj Udstillingsbygning as Nikolaj Kunsthal was named in 1981.
Up through the 1980s and 1990s, video art was developed as a new art form, and many Danish and international artists began experimenting with the formats. Nikolaj Kunsthal was one of the first exhibition venues in this country to show the new genre and later took over a video art archive, founded by Huset i Magstræde, with leading Danish and international names.
The exhibition consists of eight films selected from this archive as well as eight installations by younger artists from the Copenhagen art scene who have each created new works in relation to the exhibition and the existing archive works. It is our wish thus to create a dialogue between generations in the exhibition. It gives the new works a different angle to work from, while we can reflect on the aesthetics and messages of the video medium forty years ago – as well as how it is received today and continued by the city’s contemporary artists.
